Over 1,000 Hospital Social Media Sites

The latest update of the Hospital Social Media List is out – and it’s a big one. It’s only been six weeks,  but 79 new hospitals have been added. Here are the stats:

Category – Current Number  (Number on Nov. 27, 2009)

  • Hospitals doing Social Media – 540 (473)
  • YouTube – 247 (218)
  • Facebook – 316 (254)
  • Twitter – 419 (356)
  • Blog – 67 (57)
  • Total # of Social Media Sites – 1,049 (885)

Click through to the list an you’ll find some other changes. I felt the old list was getting too large to be useful, so now each state has a dedicated page, along with a state Twitter feed.  The main page also has sortable table, so you can quickly see who has the most Twitter accounts (Texas) or Facebook accounts (Illinois), etc.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be posting a series of updates from the twitter account @hospitalgroup – each update will link to one of the social media sites added in this update.  This will get some visibility for the new hospitals.

What’s next:

I’m working a few additional changes.

1. In the next month or so, you may see the number of listings decrease. Social media sites that have not been updated in the past six months will be removed.

2. Look for a new feature – state level custom search engines. Just like the national hospital search but focused on the hospitals in a single state.

As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions.

Great work putting this list together! Thought you may want to know that Dayton Children’s official name is The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton (rather than Dayton Children’s Hospital). We appreciate all of your efforts to compile this information. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Interesting list! But no international hospital category? Would be nice to see that as well.

That’s a comprehensive list! Thanks for sharing this.

This is a great list you have compiled. I noticed on Sarasota Memorial Hospital (Florida), the link to Facebook is to an old group page that was set up quite a while ago. We now have a Fan Page for SMH. Here is the link. http://www.facebook.com/SarasotaMemorialHospital?ref=mf

Also, we now have a YouTube channel. That link is http://www.youtube.com/user/smhcs.

    Thanks again!

Please remember to include Progress West HealthCare Center on your Missouri list. We’ve been tweeting ER wait times since August and now we’re providing information on Facebook, too. Progress West is a member of BJC HealthCare.

Ed, thanks for the list. FYI on the state abbreviations your ND and DC links don;t work – get errors and Arkansas is AR. Hope that helps – thanks for the list. @levelwing – follow us.

Thank you! Those links have been fixed, and you have earned a new follower :)

Great list Ed! Thanks for sharing. Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb, IL and Valley West Hospital, in Sandwich, IL, have both Twitter (recent) and Facebook accounts since November of 2008.

Ed… amazing list! Definitely an excellent tool for those of us who are professionals in healthcare marketing and social media marketing. With that in mind, what is the best way to contact you with the rest of the OSF HealthCare social media sites? We are very proactive about our hospitals and other operating units being on social media and we want to make sure they get represented here.

This is a great list and great resource!

Covenant Health (@covenanthealth) of Knoxville, TN is on Twitter, as are two of the medical centers in its system: Parkwest Medical Center (@parkwest) and Thompson Cancer Survival Center (@thompsoncancer)

    Hi, Ed.
Admire your leading work in this area. Just started the internal approval and buy in process. Have you uncovered any data regarding the number of hospitals that allow internal or employee access to the hospitals’ social media sites (whether sites are blocked, open or limited)?
    Thanks.
